Looking to get free publicity for your church, cause, kids’ Girl Scout troupe or other nonprofit? You are in the same boat with a lot of people, but there is one thing that many people are over-looking – the public affairs shows.
There are many of these shows out there, and you can find them. In fact, you’ve probably seen them before – they are on Saturdays and Sundays.
Search your local news stations and look for these shows. You can find them under programming or sometimes you can find them under the name of the personality who hosts the show. In order for TV stations to get their license renewed, they need to do programming in the public good, and therefore these public affair shows are on every TV station in this country.
Don’t ignore these public affair shows. They air at a decent time, you are allowed quite a bit of time to talk, and they even allow you to display your website on-air. These shows are great vehicles to getting your message out.
When I was first starting out as a journalist in Lancing, Michigan over 20 years ago, I was a host of one of these public affairs shows. In addition to my other duties at the station, finding guests got to be a chore. Guests weren’t coming to me with story ideas. I had to go find them in addition to finding other news stories.
So if you have an event, organization or cause to promote, bring your story to the host of a public affairs show. These shows really are great avenues to get your message across.
